Sligo - Land Of Hearts Desire
Sligo town is situated in the northwest corner of the island of Ireland (within the Republic Of Ireland).
Sligo is a typical Irish market town with a population of approximately 18,000. Sligo has some fine traditional old pubs with live music available most nights.
Sligo town is situated on the Garavogue river that connects Lough Gill to the Atlantic Ocean through the heart of the town. The town landscape is also dominated by two large mountains, Ben Bulben and Knocknarea, made famous in the poetry of W.B. Yeats.
Sligo has some fantastic beaches (blue flag standard) and beautiful scenery. Watersports are very popular, surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing in particular. The coastline is exposed to the power of the Atlantic Ocean which produces some of the best surfing conditions in western Europe.
Sligo is also famous for the large number of ancient Neolithic sites and prehistoric monuments in the local area (over 5,000 sites recorded, the highest concentration of anywhere else in Europe!). The largest of which is Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, only 5 minutes drive from town centre and is well worth a visit!
